I like the argument I am seeing, and whole heartedly agree. Especially as someone who worked as a researcher at the university level. Even getting your study off the ground and through an IRB was exhausting.
However, I worry that what you are arguing for would actually end up as just a bunch of of independent scholars doing endless meta analysis
Endless meta-analysis seems far more common in our age of Organization Man than it ever was in the Enlightenment or Industrial Age. However, you have correctly identified the need for some directing force to provide reasons for investigation. I believe this leadership could be provided by wealthy independent researchers in the mould of Edison or Loomis, who create environments like Menlo Park for the poorer ones to conduct research.
